FEDS FOIL $2 MILLION CALIFORNIA PLATINUM SCAM.
San Francisco, CA, Sep. 10 (UPI) -- Four suspects
face charges they allegedly tried to swindle companies in California
and Pennsylvania out of more than $2 million worth of platinum.
A federal grand jury in San Francisco indicted the four Thursday on fraud charges for allegedly posing as executives of the Santa Clara, Calif., company and placing an e-mail order for the precious metal with a dealer in Pennsylvania. According to the U.S. attorney's office in San Francisco,
the defendants allegedly schemed to pick up the platinum, which is used
in semiconductor production and was valued at $2.3 million, from a shipping
company office while in transit. The FBI got wind of the alleged scheme
and replaced the platinum with stainless steel plates and a hidden tracking
device. The alleged conspirators were arrested in late August pending Thursday's formal indictment. Press Release from: United
